Building with Heart: The Startecon Story

How Startecon Turns Complex Data Challenges into Practical Solutions

For more than 30 years, Mikko Lähdeaho has worked at the intersection of data, technology, and problem-solving.

His career has taken him through IT consulting, business intelligence, data analytics, data warehousing, and database development. Along the way, he has served organizations of nearly every size, from major companies such as Microsoft, Nokia, SSAB, and financial institutions to businesses operated by a single person.

Regardless of their size, Mikko noticed that many organizations faced a similar challenge: they possessed valuable data but lacked a clear way to understand and use it.

His work centered on helping organizations identify their data sources, determine which information mattered, and turn it into reports, analyses, and actionable insights. Depending on the problem, that could involve business intelligence, traditional data analytics, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.

After years of completing consulting projects for other organizations, however, Mikko began thinking about what it would mean to build something of his own.

Creating Something That Could Grow

Consulting was rewarding, but every completed project ultimately belonged to the client.

Mikko compares the experience to bringing something to life and then immediately handing it to someone else. He wanted the opportunity to create a product his own team could continue developing, refining, and watching grow.

That desire led to the founding of Startecon in November 2021.

From the beginning, the company has also been a family endeavor. Mikko’s son joined the business to apply and expand his software development skills, while Mikko’s brother brought specialized expertise from his PhD studies at LUT University in Finland.

For Mikko, hiring family wasn’t simply about their relationships. Trust and capability mattered.

His son approaches software development carefully and with focus. His brother possesses professional skills the company genuinely needs. Although working with family can occasionally create disagreements, their years together have produced far more successful and rewarding moments than difficult ones.

That sense of trust has also shaped how Mikko builds the rest of Startecon’s team.

A Major Pivot with a New Purpose

Startecon’s original direction included plans to enter the Russian market. The team spent nearly a year building a product, developing partnerships, establishing distributors, and preparing marketing campaigns.

Then Russia’s war against Ukraine brought those plans to an abrupt stop.

With the company unable to continue along its original path, the team gathered the pieces of what it had created and moved in a new direction. They turned their attention toward sustainability, an area receiving increasing attention from the European Union and the companies operating within it.

Today, Startecon is developing solutions designed to automate and simplify ESG reporting and management.

The goal is practical: make sustainability-related work easier for businesses while creating a product that delivers genuine, lasting value.

That distinction is important to Mikko. He doesn’t want Startecon to build technology solely as a money-making machine. He wants the team to create something useful that is developed with care and continually fine-tuned until it works the way customers need it to.

The Problems Others Avoid

Some companies search for easy, highly profitable projects. Mikko is often drawn toward the opposite.

Startecon’s customers regularly bring the team their most difficult problems, the challenges they can’t easily solve on their own. These projects can demand considerable time and may not always be the company’s most profitable assignments, but they’re often the most interesting.

Mikko finds deep satisfaction in hearing a customer say, “We have a problem, and we know you can solve it.”

The team then studies the challenge, tests possible solutions, and continues working until it finds a way forward.

This commitment has helped Mikko maintain relationships that stretch back decades. One customer relationship has continued for approximately 20 years, with the client following Mikko across different companies because they trusted his ability to understand and solve complex problems.

For Mikko, those relationships are more than transactions. During a period when longtime customers could not contact him, he discovered that he genuinely missed receiving their calls and solving new problems together.

Growing Without Losing the Connection

Startecon currently has five employees and five interns serving placements that typically last between two and six months. The company regularly welcomes new interns and creates opportunities for the strongest contributors to become permanent employees. In a single recent week, two interns joined the company as full-time team members.

Mikko hopes Startecon will continue growing, expand beyond Finland into other European Union markets, and eventually reach customers outside the EU. The company has already begun building relationships in Malta with potential clients and technical collaborators.

However, Mikko does not want growth to come at the expense of the company’s culture. His vision is to keep Startecon small enough that he can personally know everyone who works there.

One of his proudest moments captures that culture perfectly.

The Startecon team entered a hackathon featuring three competition categories and won one of them. Before the event, Mikko had promised that if they won, the team would spend the prize money celebrating together.

But here’s the thing: He didn’t expect to win.

When they did, they immediately booked flights to London and enjoyed the experience as a team. The prize itself wasn’t enormous, but the moment was deeply emotional. Their idea had succeeded, their work had been recognized, and they were able to celebrate what they had accomplished together.

That is the spirit behind Startecon: trusted people solving hard problems, building valuable technology, and enjoying the journey along the way.

If your organization is struggling to make sense of complex data, simplify ESG reporting, or untangle a technology challenge others have been unable to solve, connect with Startecon. Bring the team your hardest problem and discover what becomes possible when experience, persistence, and innovation work together.
