8.2 When am I tax resident and what number do I need?

Tax residence is a question of fact, not nationality.

  • More than 183 days in Malta in a year makes a person resident for that year.
  • A person who moves to Malta to establish residence is resident from the arrival date.

Foreign residents register as taxpayers and receive a 9-digit tax number (see 2.8).
