I'm looking for funding

Grants, accelerators and EU advice for founders looking for funding in Malta.

LAST UPDATED

National and EU funding routes, plus the Malta Enterprise link to residence. Status labels are explained on the Starting in Malta.

What exists

All on 6. Grants & funding:

  • Start-up Finance (6.1): repayable advance for small start-ups in listed activities. The page we read showed a deadline of 30 October 2026, so check it soon.
  • Accelerate (6.2): grant of up to €100,000 towards a recognised accelerator, for EEA-registered companies established no more than seven years earlier.
  • Other Malta Enterprise schemes (6.3), MCST research funding (6.4) and EIC Accelerator support (6.5): all still need checking.
  • Free advice on EU funding (6.6): Enterprise Europe Network / Malta Business Bureau.
  • How funding links to a residence permit (6.7): needs checking.

Research and innovation funding (Xjenza Malta, MDIA, EIT)

  • Xjenza Malta is the main body here:
    • 6.11 explains where its calls are listed
    • 6.12 covers the startup programmes (P2M prototype grants up to €30,000, Go To Market loan assistance)
    • 6.13 covers larger industrial R&D grants (Innovation for Industry, Digital Innovation, Technology Development), which don't mention startups and need checking
  • MDIA: 6.14 covers the Digital Vouchers, including up to €25,000 for sandbox enrolment. 6.15 covers the MDIA's own skills scheme, which is for individuals.
  • EIT: 6.16 covers the EIT Regional Innovation Booster (up to €90,000) and EIT Jumpstarter; both 2026 calls are closed. 6.17 (other EIT programmes) is still open.
  • Timing: P2M accepts no submissions from the end of September to the end of December, and most 2026 R&D deadlines have passed, so plan for the next rounds.

Equity investment: angels, VC and private equity

  • Malta Venture Capital (MVC), a government-backed equity initiative, is covered in 6.18. It has no official page yet. Its website is expected, and details will come from MVC directly.
  • Seed Investment Scheme (6.19, verified): a 35% income tax credit for qualifying individual investors, up to €250,000 a year, applied for through MIMCOL. Worth raising with any Malta-based angel.
  • Advice on raising angel and VC money (6.20): only commercial guides exist so far, labelled unofficial. They agree that personal introductions beat cold outreach and that ownership, IP and investor rights should be settled early. We have no first-hand founder stories yet, so if you have raised money in Malta, please share it with the Malta Startup Space team.
  • Private equity (6.21): no official source found yet.
  • Investors have their own page: I'm an angel investor.

Browsing everything that's open

  • 6.8 on the same page covers grants.mt, an unofficial directory of 481 schemes with deadlines. It's useful for discovery and has a first-time owner guide, but it's run by one person and its dates don't always match the official pages. Always confirm on the issuing body's page.

If your clients use grants, and you provide the service

Some schemes only pay out for services from approved providers. See 6.9 (MySkills training providers, with the registration steps) and 6.10 (advisory and report schemes, still being checked). Registration is with the body that runs each scheme, so the first question to ask is who that is.

Before you apply

Amounts and deadlines change, so always confirm on the Malta Enterprise page linked in each answer. See Open questions and gaps.
